How a game of Gomoku works
Two players alternate placing stones on a 15×15 board, Black first. A stone never moves once played and is never captured, so every move is permanent and the board only ever fills up. The first player to build an unbroken line of five or more of their own stones — horizontal, vertical or diagonal — wins immediately.
Play Lounge uses the freestyle ruleset, the version most people learn as children. Freestyle means an overline counts: if you end up with six or seven in a row, that wins just the same as five. Tournament Renju forbids overlines for Black and adds further restrictions; freestyle has none of that, which makes it quicker to pick up and a better fit for a game against a friend.
If all 225 points fill with no line of five, the game is a draw — though in practice that is rare, because the board is large enough that someone almost always builds a threat the other player cannot answer.
